Overview

Typically, isobutylparaben is a soft, white powder, this chemical is used as a preservative in cosmetic formulations to prolong the shelf-life and prevent spoilage.

It is added at low use levels and is very cost effective and has minimal effects on formulation performance and stability. It is widely efficacious in helping to reduce bacteria and molds in formulations.

This is a controversial ingredient that has been banned in Europe for use in cosmetics. Certain studies have indicated that it may cause allergic reactions and act as an endocrine disruptor, but more studies need to be performed to determine its effects on humans.
