This fine black powder is frequently used as it is, but it is also sometimes coated with a hydrophobic layer to help it interact more effectively with oils.
An interesting fact about black iron oxides is that they are magnetically active. This would not be evident in the small amount needed for skincare products, but as a bulk ingredient, it does react to magnetic fields.
