Overview

Iron oxides are mineral pigments used to provide color in skincare products. These naturally occurring pigments are available in yellow, red, brown, and black powders.

Oftentimes, they are coated with silanes and then dispersed into carrier oils in order to make them easier to work with. As dry uncoated powders, they are not soluble in water or in oil – potentially dispersible at best, depending on the particle size and carrier fluid. Therefore, coating them in an oil-loving layer and dispersing them in oils produces more vivid colors and less settling of the pigments.
