Overview

Hydroxypropyl starch phosphate is a cold-water soluble starch that is derived from corn. This ingredient is primarily used as a viscosity controlling agent, in which it creates a clear water-based gel when added to the water phase of an emulsion.

Supplied as a white to yellow powder, hydroxypropyl starch phosphate serves as an excellent alternative to polymeric thickeners when a natural ingredient is desired.

In addition, this ingredient functions as a bulking agent, in which is increases the volume of skincare products – specifically dry products or products that require reconstitution. Hydroxypropyl starch phosphate is also compatible with ionic, or charged, ingredients, like those found in cleansing products.
