Overview

Glutathione is a tripeptide that occurs naturally in many plants, animals, and even some bacteria. It is composed of three amino acids, which are cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine.

This material acts as an antioxidant, in that it is effective in fighting against free radical oxygen species. Free radicals are harmful to the skin and body because they can break down important chemicals, including DNA.

In addition, glutathione serves as a reducing agent, which is the oppositive of an oxidizer. Here, it chemically breaks down high energy bonds and replaces them with lower energy compounds.

This ingredient is also used occasionally as a fragrance.
