Overview

Glucose oxidase is a synthetically produced dimeric protein, which means it is a set of two individual proteins that are folded together in a specific way. It is naturally occurring in some species of fungi and certain insects, where it serves as an enzyme to break down glucose.

In skincare cosmetics, glucose oxidase is useful for protecting skin against certain types of light. Due to its large molecular structure, it can reflect light away from the skin. In addition, its particular chemical makeup can absorb some harmful wavelengths of light.
