Overview

Geranium maculatum oil is an essential oil obtained from the above-ground parts of the Geranium maculatum, also known as the wild geranium. It is a wild-growing species that is very common in North America.

The essential oil distilled from this plant should not be confused with Rose Geranium essential oil – the one is distilled from Pelargonium graveolens. Geranium maculatum oil consists mainly of citronellol, geraniol, citronellyl formate, and linalool - which give it its characteristic, rose-like scent. It is used as a fragrance in skincare products.

The biological activities of Geranium maculatum have not yet been researched, but it seems that the essential oil is a very good insect repellent.
