Gentiana Lutea root extract is an extract obtained from the root of the great yellow gentian, a mountainous plant native to Central Europe. The extract is used as a fragrance in skincare products due to its content of essential oil.
The roots of yellow gentian have been used as bitter tonics and liqueur ingredients for centuries and the active compounds, amarogentin and gentiopicrin, are two of the most bitter compounds known to mankind. The bitterness works as a stomach tonic, stimulating digestion and appetite.
The root, besides being extremely bitter, also has its own specific aroma (which is spicy and earthy with a hint of citrus fruits) thanks to the relatively small content of essential oil.
