Overview

Eugenol is a volatile, colorless/pale yellow, fragrant liquid that can be found naturally in the essential oils derived from cloves, cinnamon, basil, and bay leaf. Eugenol has a pleasant, spicy, and warm scent that is similar to cloves or pumpkin spice and is often used as a fragrance in perfumery and skincare products.

People with sensitive skin should be careful when using products containing eugenol, or at least do a patch test first, as it is a potential irritant.

Eugenol is not only used as a fragrance, but also as a local anesthetic. That is why it is sometimes used in stomatology to numb a toothache. The old home remedy for a toothache – putting a whole clove beside the aching tooth – works based on this, since the eugenol numbs the pain.
