Overview

Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is derived from the alpha-amino acid known as histidine. This ingredient functions as a powerful and versatile antioxidant.

In-vitro testing, which is done in a lab setting and not with live subjects, has shown that ergothioneine scavenges hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals are tiny and highly reactive molecules that can interact with organic materials, such as DNA, to cause irreversible and pervasive damage. Ergothioneine protects against these radicals, theoretically, but in-vivo research – or studies done on live subjects – still need to be conducted.
