Overview

Epigallocatechin gallate is a bioactive compound isolated from green tea. Chemically, it is a polyphenol related to flavonoids and tannins and has all of their characteristic properties: a very good antioxidant, astringent, and anti-inflammatory ingredient in your skincare product.

Epigallocatechin gallate has actually been tested on living humans in clinical studies (a rare instance in skincare science indeed!) and the following was discovered: Epigallocatechin gallate is beneficial for people with dry and damaged skin, and even for those with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis because it reduces redness and skin scaling. It helps the skin to heal correctly, reducing scars and speeding up the healing process.

Lastly, it helps to combat UV damage in skin cells through its antioxidant properties. It is definitely a good plant-based ingredient for your skin, but also a very unstable one. The product must be protected against light and air with your other antioxidant products (like vitamin C).
