Overview
Disodium phosphate is an inorganic compound based on the element phosphorous. This material is dibasic, which means it carries two negative charges and is alkaline, or basic, in its pH.
Disodium phosphate is used in skincare products primarily as a pH adjuster. When added to a product, the pH will adjust upward, which is more basic. This is commonly needed to neutralize acidic solutions or to cause synthetic polymers to unfold and create a gel.
In addition to being a pH adjuster, disodium phosphate is also an anticorrosive agent and occasionally a fragrance.
