Overview

Dipropylene glycol is a thin, clear, colorless liquid that has several uses.

One of its central functions is as a solvent, as this ingredient is excellent for dispersing insoluble solids, like iron oxides, and dissolving liquids that are not normally miscible with each other. Dipropylene glycol is also useful as a viscosity controlling agent.

This ingredient can reduce the thickness of skincare products when it is added to the water phase of emulsions, such as lotions, serums, and emulsion-based toners.

Finally, dipropylene glycol is also used occasionally as a fragrance.
