Overview

Dextran is a polysaccharide derived from the metabolism of sucrose by lactic acid bacteria. Very similar in structure to dextrin, dextran only differs based on a few chemical bonds.

This ingredient is utilized for its ability to control viscosity, and when it is dispersed into water, it swells to form a thick gel. This is useful for the production of thicker skincare products, such as creams and pomades.

Dextran also serves as a bulking agent in this way, as it increases the volume of various skincare products. In addition, this ingredient can also work as a binding agent, which is how it creates the gel texture when dissolved into water.
