A globally approved preservative ingredient. It is a powerful fungicide and a moderate bactericide, which makes it a broad-spectrum preservative. Because it is mildly effective against bacteria, it is often paired with stronger bactericides.

Overview

Dehydroacetic acid is a globally approved preservative ingredient. It is a powerful fungicide and is mildly effective against bacteria, which makes it a broad-spectrum preservative.

Because it is not as effective against bacteria as some preservatives, it is often paired with stronger bactericides, such as phenoxyethanol or benzyl alcohol, to create a highly effective system.

Dehydroacetic acid has a particularly good safety profile, as it is low in toxicity, non-sensitizing, and non-irritating. This ingredient is supplied as a pale yellow crystalline powder and has use levels of around 0.5 percent.
