Overview

Commonly known as globe artichoke, Cynara scolymus is a plant native to the Mediterranean region, where it is commonly cooked as a vegetable. The edible part is the flower bud, which is surrounded by layers of green fleshy leaves.

Scientists have discovered many beneficial effects of artichokes: when eaten, they lower cholesterol and improve liver health and the function of the gallbladder.

It is used for its antioxidant properties in skincare. These effects, however, have only started to be included in the research.

What we know for sure about the extract is that it contains a plethora of antioxidative compounds such as flavonoids, organic acids, and other polyphenols.
