Overview

Cyclodextrin is a type of oligosaccharide comprised of a ring of glucose molecules. This ingredient is derived from starch and is commonly used as an absorbent due to its ability to hold onto molecules within its ring structure.

For example, it is commonly paired with the emollient oil squalane, in which the squalane is absorbed into the cyclodextrin powder. This is useful for pressed or loose powder products that want to deliver soft emolliency to the skin.

In addition to working as an absorbent, this off-white powder also works as a chelating agent. A chelating agent removes harmful metal ions from water-based systems by binding them within their large molecular structure.
