Corylus americana seed oil is an emollient fatty oil expressed from American hazelnuts.
Hazelnuts contain up to 67% oil, which is mostly extracted by cold-pressing. The oil mainly contains triacylglycerols, which consist of unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acid).
Other beneficial constituents include α-tocopherol (vitamin E), squalene, and a bit of phytosterols. Thanks to its mother tree, hazelnut oil also contains phenolics and lignans, which are compounds responsible for its slightly astringent taste. They offer wound healing, and antioxidant properties.
Hazelnut seed oil is used as a base oil in skincare. It has emollient, occlusive, and antioxidant properties. Virgin hazelnut oil has better moisturizing properties than refined hazelnut oil.
The biggest producer of hazelnuts is Turkey. Hazelnuts are also one of the main ingredients in Nutella.
