Overview

Citrus unshiu peel extract is an extract obtained from the rind or peel of satsuma mandarins (Citrus unshiu). The extract is often produced from the rinds left over after juicing. Satsumas are known for their easy-to-peel, loose rinds, making them a favorite winter fruit.

The greatest component of the peel extract is essential oil. It has a fresh, citrusy scent and is used in skincare products as a fragrance ingredient. The main compound responsible for the citrus scent is called limonene (and mandarin essential oil can be made up of up to 70% limonene).

Satsuma rinds are also rich in flavonoids and various organic acids, which have antioxidant properties. Limonoids, compounds hotly researched in skincare science, are triterpenes from citrus fruit peels with the (potential) ability to stimulate the production of collagen and to block the formation of the dark skin pigment melanin. These effects are, however, have not yet been researched enough.

People sensitive towards citrus fruits should be careful with this ingredient, as it may cause a sun-induced skin rash.
