Capryloyl Salicylic Acid

A derivative of salicylic acid, with bigger and more lipid-soluble molecules. This makes it more powerful and safer than salicylic acid. It is used as an exfoliating and peeling agent.

Overview

Capryloyl salicylic acid is an ester of salicylic acid and caprylic acid. The addition of caprylic acid to salicylic acid increases its solubility in lipids and increases the size of the molecule, thereby making it less likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

It instead acts primarily on the skin’s surface and is claimed to be more effective in lower concentrations than plain salicylic acid. A chemical peeling with 5-10% Capryloyl salicylic acid is just as effective as a 20-50% glycolic acid peel.

You can read all about the effects of salicylic acid here. In short, it is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that acts as a gentle exfoliating ingredient and that has additional anti-inflammatory and pore-unclogging properties. In high concentrations, it is used to treat warts or used as a chemical peel.

It is important to note that all ingredients derived from salicylic acid should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
