Overview

Camphor is a transparent waxy solid ingredient that occurs naturally in various plants and trees. Most camphor is produced synthetically from turpentine oil, despite its wide availability in the natural world.

This ingredient is commonly used as a fragrance, due to its earthy, plant-like odor, and it is also used as a soothing agent to calm irritated skin.

Another function of camphor is as a denaturant because it has an intensely bitter taste. Finally, camphor makes a good plasticizer – or a type of ingredient that lowers viscosity and leaves behind a strong film, such as for hair sprays and gels.
