Overview

C12-16 alcohols are also known as lauryl/myristyl alcohols. This vegetable-derived fatty alcohol serves several functions, including emulsion stabilizer, viscosity controller, and emollient.

C12-16 alcohols are commonly used as a co-emulsifier in oil-in-water emulsions, which means they help hold the oil and water phases together to form lotions and creams. Beyond emulsification, this ingredient can also control viscosity. Once enough is added to fulfill the emulsifier duties, adding more of the ingredient will thicken the product further.

Finally, C12-16 alcohols act as emollients, in that they affect the feel and overall aesthetics of the product. These fatty alcohols give a soft, cushiony feel when applied to the skin.
