Overview

Butylparaben is an ingredient in a class of preservatives known as parabens.

At one point, parabens were very popular preservatives due to their cost effectiveness and the good protection they offered against microbes. However, they have recently come under scrutiny for possibly being harmful to the skin.

Yet, studies have shown that at the low use levels found in cosmetic products of 1% or less, parabens are harmless and are excellent preservatives. Butylparaben, specifically, is highly effective against fungi and yeast, and is often used in conjunction with preservatives that are more effective against bacteria.
