Overview

Beta-sitosterol is a plant-based equivalent of cholesterol, with emollient and anti-inflammatory properties on the skin.

It is an oil-soluble substance with a steroid structure and can commonly be found in plant oils, roots, barks, and the leaves of various plants. It is often a part of plant extracts. Isolated beta-sitosterol is a white, waxy substance with a characteristic smell.

When applied to the skin, beta-sitosterol has anti-inflammatory and emollient properties, takes part in restoring the barrier function of dry and cracked skin, and can even help to treat dry skin conditions like eczema.
