Overview

Benzyl alcohol is a multifunctional ingredient that is supplied as a clear, colorless liquid. The main function of this ingredient is as a flavoring agent and a fragrance.

In addition, it acts as a broad spectrum preservative when accompanied by other preservative boosters, such as caprylyl glycol and dehydroacetic acid.

Benzyl alcohol also functions as a viscosity controlling agent. When added to water-based systems, it decreases the surface tension and also makes the product thinner.

It also makes a great solvent, and it is useful for combining water with ingredients that are not normally very soluble in water.
