Overview
Behenic acid is a long-chain carboxylic acid, which means it has a chain of 22 carbons that is oil-loving, as well as a water-loving group at the end. This separation of functions across the same molecule make behenic acid a good emulsifier.
Typically, this ingredient is found in water-in-oil emulsions, or as a co-emulsifier in oil-in-water emulsions alongside ingredients such as ceteth-20 or steareth-21. A plant-derived ingredient, behenic acid can also function as a surfactant in cleansing products.
