Aspalathus linearis leaf extract is an antioxidant and astringent extract from the leaves of the Rooibos tea bush. Rooibos originates from South Africa, where the species Aspalathus linearis is endemic.
Rooibos tea, unlike regular black or green tea, does not contain any caffeine. Instead, Rooibos leaves are a rich source of flavonoids and tannins, with antioxidant and astringent effects on the skin. The extract might help to combat the effects of reactive oxygen species and the tannins give the skin a tightening feeling and reduce the appearance of large pores.
Some studies suggest a beneficial effect of rooibos extract on wound healing or, in mixture with green tea extract, wrinkle reduction, but those definitely need a bit more research.
