Overview

Ananas sativus fruit extract is extracted from pineapple fruits, or more commonly, from the residue left over after juicing (e.g., the cores, peels, stems, and leafy crowns).

This extract contains many bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and vitamin C, although the most important is a mixture of protein-degrading enzymes jointly called bromelain. This is the enzyme that makes your mouth tingle after eating a fresh pineapple - it breaks down some proteins in your mouth mucosa.

Bromelain is a perspective medicine in many different forms and applications, although in skincare products is used as a skin-softening agent and mild exfoliant. It also has some anti-inflammatory activity and may help with the healing of wounds and scars. Some medical-grade bromelain gels exist in the market, but these require an appointment with a doctor to obtain.
