Overview

Aluminum stearate is a white powdered salt based on aluminum and stearic acid. This ingredient is mainly used to control viscosity and stabilize emulsions.

Oftentimes, it is found alongside pigments, such as titanium dioxide, and in these cases, it acts to thicken the titanium dioxide dispersion and stabilize the mineral particles.

Aluminum stearate is hydrophobic, which means it plays well with oils. This is why it makes a great thickener for oil-based products, including lotions, creams, and serums.
