Overview

Agar is a jelly-like substance derived from red algae and consists of a blend of two polysaccharides: agarose and agaropectin.

In skincare products, agar is useful because it creates a water-based gel, which can be used as a viscosity controlling agent through the thickening of emulsions and other water-based products.

In addition, agar can be used as a binding ingredient, in which it helps hold together the various ingredients in a product, such as in emulsions like lotions, creams, and some serums. Agar can also be used as a fragrance, due to its sweet odor.
