Overview

Aesculus hippocastanum seed extract is an extract obtained from horse chestnut seeds. It has beneficial effects on inflamed skin that is experiencing swelling, redness, bruises, or broken veins.

Horse chestnut is a tree native to the mountainous regions of Greece, although nowadays it can commonly be found in parks and cities all around the world. The seeds, also known as conkers, should not be mistaken for edible chestnuts: when fresh, they are mildly poisonous. The seed extract, however, has valuable properties for medicine.

The horse chestnut seed extract contains triterpenoid saponins, mainly a mixture called Aescin (or Escin). Aescin is registered as a drug (under ATC code C05CX03) which, in pill form and taken orally, can treat hematomas, varicose veins, and help with the healing process after injuries and surgeries.
