Overview
1,2-Hexanediol is commonly used as a preservative and a preservative-boosting ingredient. While it can be used alone in a formula, it is most well-studied against bacteria, so a supporting antifungal preservative would be beneficial in the formula as well.
Additionally, 1,2-hexanediol can be used as a solvent. This thin liquid is excellent at dispersing minerals, such as pigments, before adding them into higher viscosity liquids.
1,2-Hexanediol can also serve as a solubilizer, in which it disperses small amounts of oily substances, such as fragrances, into a water system while maintaining its clarity.
